Tiffany originally from Syracuse, NY began cooking at a young age as a hobby. Both her parents loved to cook & often it was a family affair resulting in big Sunday night dinners experimenting with different ethnic cuisines. In 2000, she started a catering business in Scottsdale, AZ specializing in unique sandwiches, salads, soups & sweets. Meeting & marrying Brad brought her to Isla Mujeres in 2002. Brad, a charter captain with AZ Grand sport fishing had been living 6 months of the year in Isla Mujeres since 1999. Once Tiffany & Brad started a family, they decide to make Isla their home year round, only vacationing in the States to see some family & friends.
The name Sonrisas Catering came from a nickname they called their son when he was little, Señor Sonrisas, Mister Smiles in English. It seemed only appropriate to name their catering business Sonrisas Catering since it was created by Tiffany & Brad based on their love of entertaining, preparing delicious food & sharing that cuisine with others who live on Isla & those who love to visit. All of which makes them smile.
Brad & Tiffany carefully created their menu based on the fruits, vegetables & meats that are available on the Island & in season.
On December 21, 2010 they opened up Barlito, bakery & market cafe on the SW corner of Hidalgo & Abasolo. Barlito is open Tuesday through Saturday from 8am to 3pm, serving breakfast, lunch & lots of gourmet food to go. They have outside seating as well as inside tables & bar seating. Quickly, they were island famous for Brad's baked goods, 7 grain/oat nut/honey whole wheat breads, everything/sesame/plain/honey oat bagels, cinnamon rolls filled with almonds & raisins, cheddar/cheddar jalapeno/butter biscuits & his grandma Wareing's dinner rolls. The lunch menu changes daily incorporating the freshest seasonal ingredients that Tiffany finds at the local market. Always a nice selection of soups, specials, paninis, sandwiches, salads & house made sweets. (Lots of vegetarian options as well.) Barlito is their son Barlow's nickname. He is well known on the Island as the blue eyed boy with light brown curls who plans on being a Rock Star when he grows up. Everywhere they go someone drives by on a scooter yelling, "Hola, Barlito!" When Brad & Tiffany ask him who that was, he always shrugs & says, "Everybody knows Barlito!" They thought Barlito would be a perfect name for their restaurant because they too want everyone to know Barlito.
Brad & Tiffany are having so much fun sharing their love of food & flavors with all the visitors & residents of Isla Mujeres at Barlito & with Sonrisas Catering.
