Visiting Isla

Our Island Paradise, Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is a small island off the coast of Cancun, just a short 20 minute ferry ride to paradise.  Isla may only be 5 miles long & a mile at its widest point but it has much to offer!  Lots of snorkeling, diving, sport fishing, meat fishing, biking, sea glass hunting, swimming, relaxing and lots of wonderful restaurants & accommodations.  Our beaches have white sand (crushed coral) & the sea is beautiful shades of turquoise. You will love every day you spend on Isla. Come visit!

Getting to Isla from Cancun

There are two transfer services that we use regularly just depends on the size of your party. We use Cancun Valet or Best Day transfer service.

If you have two or more, we recommend Cancun Valet,  www.cancunvalet.com   They are a private van service & will be waiting with a sign with your name & will help you with your luggage. They will take you to the ferry & then back to the airport on your return. You fill out your service form online, they accept credit cards & will email you a confirmation. On your confirmation it will tell you what time they are picking you up at the ferry for your return. They have car seats if you need one, just mention this when you schedule your trip. If you want them to stop for beverages or snacks they will do so, just give them a bigger tip if they go out of their way for you (lots of luggage, beer stop, etc.). The price is $75 US round trip for up to 10 people.

If there are only one or two of you traveling, we suggest Best Day transfer service. This is a van shuttle that you may share with other people heading to the ferry. There may also be other drop offs along the way. They will not meet you outside of the airport with a sign, you will walk past all the shuttles & vans until the end & then check in with the Best Day people. They will then call your van/shuttle. You may have to wait up to 30 minutes. You will schedule this online as well, www.bestday.com  They too will send you a confirmation. This is $34 US roundtrip for 2 people, before taxes.

There are taxis but they charge approximately $56 US from the airport to the ferry & then approximately $25 US from the ferry building to the airport. The transfer services really make it easy & convenient.

Exchanging Money & Using Credit Cards

US dollars are no longer accepted everywhere so we strongly recommend you use Mexican Pesos.  Most if not all businesses here charge a premium for using US funds (the exchange is usually 10 to 1). There are cambios (change houses) on the island, but the rate is 3-5% less than you will get from the ATM.  The local bank no longer will change traveler checks.  In order to exchange US dollars you must have your passport & your Mexican tourist visa.  There is a limit to the amount you can exchange.  You can use you ATM card (as long as your PIN is 4 digits) just like you would at home, but receive pesos.  There is a 29 peso fee (about $2.40 US), per transaction so make as few withdrawals as possible.  While we feel it is perfectly safe to use credit cards here, there are very few places you can actually use them.  Be sure to notify your credit card company you will be traveling to Mexico.

Using Your Cell Phones/Black Berries/i-Phones

Before you leave the States, contact your service provider & ask about your international roaming charges & international rates.  It may be more cost effective to add an International Mexican plan to your service or turn your phone off in your home country.  Once your phone registers in Mexico, all your calls, voicemail, etc. will be charged internationally.  Even if your phone is off, every voicemail you receive will be charged at the international roaming rate. You may purchase international calling cards at many of the Centro stores & you will see the pay phones used with these cards all over downtown.  You may also be interested in getting a local cell phone.  These can be rented from us for around $5 US/day.

Internet Services

Many of the rental homes & hotels offer free wireless internet services.  If your accommodations don’t offer it, there are many internet cafes on the Island & the town square has free WiFi.  There are several restaurants as well (Jax, CoMoNo & BoBo’s to name a few).

Where to stay

If this is your first trip to Isla, we recommend staying downtown, where everything is within walking distance.  On your subsequent trips, (and we are confident there will be those), you may want to venture out and stay farther down island.  It is very easy to get around on rented golf carts that seat 4.  They rent for about $50 US per day, but accomodations are typically priced lower to offset the cost.  It is very easy to navigate the island, and you'll have a great time discovering your own little gems.  Every where you go you will feel welcome.  The Islanders are known for their hospitality.

Downtown/Centro Accommodations

There are lots of hotels & condos available downtown within walking distance to the beach, the restaurants, the shops, the nightlife & the ferry. We will recommend those that we have had friends stay at & that we have seen. There are many more & based on your research & the reviews you find, something else may work for you. Qubano, located on Abasolo just East of Barlito is known as the home of the Toston.  A great sandwich made from fried plantains instead of bread & filled with chicken & caramelized onions topped with an onion vinaigrette.  The owner, Vivian is fiesty & fun. Her menu is filled with with delicious choices incorporating her Cuban & Hungarian roots.  Every Friday she has a special that is out of this world.  Qubano is open Monday through Friday, noon to 5pm.  They do not accept credit cards.

Kash Kekun Chuc, the very best BBQ chicken. On the corner of Rueda Medina just across from the Navy hospital sits this little joint. They have a table or two or take your chicken & sides to go. Restaurants on or near Punta Sur
La Bruja, the very best local Mexican food on the Island. Roberto the owner & chef makes you feel like family. The daily special is our favorite to order but his grilled octopus is always awesome. The empanadas (cheese & chicken) are too good to pass up as an appetizer to share. And on Sundays, they serve Chilpachole. A seafood stew filled with crab, rock shrimp, octopus, calamari & fish in a spicy tomato broth that is an experience in itself. They are open every day but Thursday for breakfast, lunch & dinner & well worth the taxi ride or golf cart ride to La Gloria.  They do not accept credit cards.

El Pueblito, a little outdoor place across from Castilla de Garrafon that advertises 4 beers & guacamole for $100 pesos. Hard to pass by this place without stopping for a cold beverage. Their Azteca soup is definitely a favorite & their fajitas are good too.  They do not accept credit cards.

Night Life on Isla

As for night life, Isla is not Cancun or South Beach. We do not get a lot of highschool or college spring breakers. Hidalgo street, the main "drag" in town is lined with mostly restaurants, shops & a couple of bars. They often have bands & some dancing but it is not an all night party place!  Our favorite hang outs are a great tequila bar, Adelitas, a lounge bar, Om,  Saturdays & La Luna  & La Terraza (across from Barlito).  For the younger crowds, check out Poc Na Hostel!

Things To Do While on Isla

Before Isla Mujeres became developed it was known as a sleepy little fishing village & while the Island is no longer sleepy the fishing is still incredible.  We highly recommend a fishing Charter on the AZ Grand with Captain Brad Wareing.  Whether you want to sportfish (sailfish & marlin, all catch & release) or meat fish (dorado/mahi mahi, yellow tail, tuna, wahoo, grouper, snapper, porgy, tile) you will not be disappointed. Check out & join the AZ Grand Sportfish Charters Facebook page to see lots of pictures.  www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=122872168921

At Dolphin Discovery, you can swim with the dolphins. We have had lots of guest do this & everyone loved it.

The Turtle Farm, see & learn all about tortugas.

Swim/touch Nurse sharks, a big hit with the kids that visit us.

On Sac Bajo is the recyclable floating Island.  Richart Sowa built himself a three story house on a floating Island all made from recyclable materials.  He will take you over to the Island on his recyclable tender, give you an organic refreshment & a tour of his Island for $50 pesos per person.  MTV Cribs was just here filming his place for an episode!  It really is amazing & worth a visit!

Mid May is when whale shark season starts & you can swim with the whale sharks.  The season ends mid September.

On the South Point on Isla, you will find the Eastern most tip of Mexico & some Mayan Ruins. There is a restaurant, a lighthouse, an ice cream shop, gift shop, sculptures & a beautiful view.  There is an entrance fee to walk down to the ruins, climbing the lighthouse is free.

The Caribbean side beach is great for experienced surfers, shell & sea glass collecting & just hanging out to enjoy the waves & view. Swimming is not recommended because it can be rough & there is a current. You will see very experienced surfers on the Caribbean side.  It is legal to fish from the beach on this side.  The bay is considered protected & we do not recommend you fish there.  If you are an early riser, you will see beautiful sunrises on the Caribbean side.

North beach & family beach are great for swimming, sun bathing, people watching & sunsets. The sunsets in Isla are just beautiful.  If you want to be on the water, check out our Sonrisas Sunset Cruise page.

The Scuba Diving is great. We have had guests use Carey Dive Center (PADI) www.careydivecenter.com  & FaceBook page Carey Dive Center, Isla Mujeres, Mexico & they were very pleased. There are several other dive centers as well.

If you are interested in snorkeling, there are several pangas (local Mexican boats) that will take you out for snorkeling excursions. All are about the same price per person. If you bring your own snorkeling equipment, you can snorkel by Avalon Resort or Castilla de Garrafon (which also rents out equipment). Castilla de Garrafon is down on the South end & a great place to spend the day & snorkel, very reasonably priced & quite beautiful.

Garrafon Park, on the South end, has a zip line, kayaking, snorkeling, etc. You pay to spend the day there & all of our guests that have done it have really enjoyed it.

If you are interested in birds & natural wildlife, a trip to Contoy Island would be perfect for you.  30 kilometers north of Isla Mujeres, Isla Contoy is 8.5 kilometers in length & a sanctuary for countless species of birds, marine life & plant life.

Feel free to research any of the above things to do & you will find more information that should help you plan your vacation.

On the Sac Bajo road you will see a sign that says Kimberly's Jewelry & Art as well as the Playa Mexicano sign. You will first see a open air building with a palapa on your right. This is the art gallery. The artist, I believe his name is Jorge & his last name is Kimberly has an incredible gallery. His jewlery is absolutely beautiful. He uses real leaves & makes exquisite pieces (necklaces, rings, earings, pins) some with pearls, others encrusted with diamonds. He is a 4th generation jeweler. Honestly, you would expect to see his pieces in a high end shop on 5th Avenue or on the pages of Town & Country magazine, Apparently, he has a lot of clients who come over from Cancun. His pieces are way out of my budget but you can really appreciate the artistry & who knew the homemade sign out on the road would lead to all that on our little Island!!

Additionally

There are public tennis courts behind the Navy hospital, mid-island.

At family beach, you can swim laps along a line with floating buoys.

Isla is 5 miles long & the new Presidente of Isla Mujeres has done a great job of putting side walks around the Island. You can walk, run or rent bicycles & exercise all over the Island. On the Caribbean side, a couple blocks down from the open markets/Alexia & Giovanni's along the water is the Malecon, a walkway that goes along the coast half way down the Island.

Some of the bigger resorts, Privilege Aluxes & Avalon have exercise rooms & you may be able to buy a day pass or a pass for the week. When you arrive, stopping in to one of these resorts & asking would your best bet. They may be more flexible when it is low season or they are not completely booked.
